Wind River Solidifies Linux Leadership Position in Telecommunications Market
- Wind River's Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition Reference Design Release (RDR) available now
- Customers and partners embrace Wind River's Linux products
- Wind River is the only device software vendor that offers integrated platform for Network Equipment with support for both VxWorks and Linux
ALAMEDA, Calif. — February 14, 2005 — Wind River Systems, Inc (NASDAQ: WIND), the global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO) today announced availability of the Reference Design Release (RDR) of Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition. Platform for Network Equipment is the first Wind River platform to include a complete Linux reference file system with a rich set of networking middleware and applications. Wind River customers have already licensed over 1,000 developer seats and begun standardizing their Linux-based product development with Wind River. Their commitment, as noted in separate Wind River announcements today, solidifies Wind River's position as the leading provider of Linux-based device software solutions that help customers develop and run device software better, faster, at a lower cost and more reliably.
"With today's announcement, Wind River is delivering on the promise of Linux and helping manufacturers optimize their Linux strategy," said Chris Lanfear, director, VDC software practice. "Because Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition is built on the Linux 2.6 kernel with Open Source Development Lab Carrier Grade Linux 2.0 specification, it meets the high availability, reliability and security requirements of today's carrier grade networking equipment."
Wind River is the only device software vendor that can offer integrated platforms for network equipment with support for both the leading VxWorks real-time operating system and Linux. Customers will be able to implement and deploy carrier grade telecommunications equipment based on a dual operating system strategy more easily. They will now be able to meet high-end product requirements and gain efficiencies by leveraging software across multiple projects and operating systems.
"Other companies have attempted to provide Linux-based device software development solutions in the past, but only Wind River has been able to bring Linux to device software in a meaningful way," said John Bruggeman, chief marketing officer for Wind River. "By working with Wind River, our customers can accelerate their development on Linux to bring more innovative products to the market faster."
