Wind River Announces Product Support for Intel Pentium 4 and Intel Xeon Processors
Development Solution for Intel's Most Advanced Processors Targets High Bandwidth Network Infrastructure Equipment
INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM (Booth 424), SAN FRANCISCO, CA, February 26, 2002 - Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for connected devices, today announced comprehensive embedded software support for the new Intel Pentium 4 and the Intel Xeon processors including the market-leading VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS), Tornado integrated development environment (IDE) and a full complement of WindNet networking protocols. Wind River s development platform for these Intel Netburst microarchitecture-based processors is well suited for original equipment manufacturers (OEM) building high bandwidth carrier-class networking infrastructure gear, high-end enterprise networking equipment, and multimedia applications with high performance requirements.
Wind River s Intel Architecture Center of Excellence program combines engineering and marketing resources to facilitate porting, optimization and distribution of Wind River s embedded software for Intel Pentium processors. The alliance has resulted in a tightly integrated software platform offering from Wind River that takes advantage of advanced features of Intel s most advanced chips to date, including VxWorks RTOS support for the Intel Xeon processor s Hyper-Threading technology.
Wind River s participation with Intel in the Center of Excellence program is ensuring that our customers have access to the most advanced software support integrated and optimized with the latest Intel microprocessors, including the Pentium 4 processor and the Intel Xeon processor, said Joe Jensen, general manager for the Embedded Intel Architecture Division. The Intel Xeon processor and the Pentium 4 processor are integral components of Intel s strategy in communications and traditional embedded markets. Advanced Multi-Processing Support
Delivering two logical processors on a single chip that can execute different tasks simultaneously using shared hardware resources, Intel s hyper-threading technology results in significantly higher processing throughput for multi-threading and multi-tasking operations. As the first beneficiary of this new processing model, the Intel Xeon processor is extremely well suited for multi-processor applications that require the power of more than one processor. Wind River s VxWorks RTOS utilizes the virtual processing model to enable multi-processor application development and deployment. With the ability to distribute processes over multiple processors and shared memory objects, Wind River s platform provides fully integrated support for developing multi-processing applications.
Wind River s integrated development platform for the Intel Netburst-based Xeon and Pentium 4 processors is ideal for network service and application providers building network gateways for voice over IP (VoIP) and virtual private networks (VPNs), as well as IP routing devices and rack mounted enterprise equipment. It is also well suited for building carrier class network infrastructure equipment including core routing, switching and access equipment, carrier grade gateways for VoIP and VPNs, and chassis-based, rack mounted systems.
Wind River s Tornado AE and Tornado II development platforms supporting these processors will begin beta delivery in April 2002 and begin production shipments in August 2001. Wind River will also provide support for the Intel E7500 Scalable Performance Board Development Kit, currently being demonstrated at IDF.
