Wind River and Freescale Introduce Multiprocessing Solution for the Freescale MPC8572 Processor
Companies will demonstrate their latest joint multicore solution at the first-ever Power Architecture(TM) Developer Conference
AUSTIN, Texas — Sept. 24, 2007— Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIND) and Freescale Semiconductor today demonstrated an end-to-end multicore solution optimized for Freescale's MPC8572 dual-core processor at the 2007 Power Architecture™ Developer Conference, hosted by Power.org. Wind River optimized the solution by tailoring its industry-leading VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS) specifically to support symmetric multiprocessing (SMP). The demonstration, currently available for viewing at the Wind River and Freescale booths at the Conference, marks the first time SMP software has been previewed publicly on the MPC8572 processor.
Multicore solutions from Freescale and Wind River are designed to help remove the complexity associated with developing a software solution on a multicore silicon system while taking full advantage of the performance benefits of multicore hardware components, ultimately enabling customers to improve performance, lower costs and significantly reduce time-to-market. The MPC8572 family of processors is designed to offer clock speeds from 1.2 GHz up to 1.5 GHz, combining two powerful e500 processor cores, enhanced peripherals and high-speed interconnect technology to balance processor performance with I/O system throughput. Based on Freescale's 90-nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) copper interconnect process technology, the MPC8572 is designed to deliver higher performance with lower power dissipation. The MPC8572 processor provides a significant performance increase and represents the next step in continuous innovation from the popular PowerQUICC™ family of embedded processors. With uncompromising integration, the MPC8572 platform builds on the performance of Power Architecture technology and adds advanced features to enhance deep packet inspection, classification and security acceleration.
