What’s New in Wind River eLxr Pro
The March 2025 release of eLxr Pro highlights security enhancements and enterprise edge readiness.
eLxr Pro™ is Wind River’s commercial-support offering for a reliable, secure, and cost-saving enterprise-grade Linux that addresses the unique challenges of near-edge and far-edge computing. eLxr Pro is based on the eLxr project, an open source, Debian-derivative Linux distribution that broadens access to cloud-native environments while connecting edge computing devices.
The latest release of eLxr Pro addresses three pivotal areas:
- Enhanced security and compliance
- Optimized enterprise readiness
- Expanded enterprise, edge, and cloud features
Enhanced Security and Compliance
Security and compliance are top priorities in eLxr Pro’s latest release, based on Debian 12.9 (aka “bookworm”). eLxr Pro has secured Implementation Under Test (IUT) list status for FIPS 140-3 certification on five core cryptographic modules, part of the U.S. Cryptographic Module Validation Program. This achievement strengthens our commitment to delivering top-tier encryption solutions for applications that require the highest levels of security.
The new release also includes a submission for Center for Internet Security (CIS) Benchmarks to help organizations maintain a secure infrastructure and ensure alignment with industry security standards.
Optimized Enterprise Readiness
The new release adds several integrations to improve enterprise security. Among them are CrowdStrike for endpoint protection, Tanium for enterprise-grade endpoint management, and Rapid7 security analytics to address threat detection and response. These integrations help businesses fortify their security postures against cyberthreats.
Expanded Enterprise, Edge, and Cloud Features
This release made improvements in enterprise stability, reliability, and manageability, with more coming in a June update. The logging system has become more reliable, with better options for system observability, which makes it easier to monitor and troubleshoot operations. Quality assurance automation is expanded for testing features to improve software reliability. Performance and stability improvements make the experience smoother and more responsive. Enhancements to the eLxr Pro repository improve package management for easier software deployment and maintenance.
For customers using eLxr Pro in cloud and edge computing environments, this release introduces several key improvements. The inclusion of eLxr cloud images in the QCOW2 format simplifies virtualization, making it easier to deploy in cloud-based environments. Additional cloud-native enhancements further expand support for containerized workloads, allowing organizations to efficiently manage their cloud applications.
Looking ahead, eLxr Pro will continue to build on these advancements, further strengthening security, enhancing enterprise readiness, and expanding cloud and edge capabilities to meet the needs of mission-critical applications.
