It’s the most wonderful time of the year, for Telco

It’s that time of year again.

Time for: twelve hour days followed by fabulous late night dinners, possible public transit strikes, and a chance to witness the most cutting edge mobile technology on the planet.  Yes, I’m talking about Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain.

This year, as in years past, Wind River will be at MWC in force to support our partners and customers as they show their latest offerings designed to evolve the world of mobile communications. Our team of experts will be hosting meetings in the Intel booth (Hall 3, Stand 3E31), and our products will be featured in over a dozen demonstrations throughout the event. A big theme for us this year is the network edge, which is reflected in the demonstrations involving our products.

As we gain momentum with the Internet of Things (IoT) and pave the road to 5G, getting compute power to the edge of the network becomes more and more important. This approach is known as Mobile Edge Computing (MEC). By placing cloud computing capabilities at the edge, you effectively create a “fog” which enables mobile operators, service and content providers, Over-The-Top content (OTT) players and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) to capture value from the proximity, context, agility and speed that an edge compute solution can provide.

With MEC, it’s as though we’ll be installing lots of “mini data centers” located closer to the applications that need the compute power.  The importance of high reliability and low latency in an actual Telco data center goes without saying.  To be able to achieve that same level of Telco reliability and performance in a small form-factor on the edge is a challenge we can help our partners and customers overcome with Wind River Titanium Cloud.
