LSIS - Achieving the First SIL4 Certification for Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) in Korea

Wind River customers around the world are delivering innovative products that are improving the industries and regions they serve – often, they are the pioneers and are the first in achieving a major milestone.  Such is the case with LSIS, a leading specialist in electric power and automation solutions. In 2011, the company engaged in a national project to develop the Korean Radio-based Train Control System (KRTCS) for the unmanned remote control of trains via Long-Term Evolution (LTE) wireless communication and Wi-Fi.   An overriding goal of the KRTCS project was to achieve the Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL4) certification, the highest safety grade in the rail sector, which would mark the first such certification for Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) in Korea. The key issue was that the entire project, including development of standard features, onsite testing, demonstration, and certification, had to be completed within three and a half years.

LSIS used Wind River VxWorks® Cert Platform and Wind River Professional Services to accelerate the delivery of their smart train system, and achieve Korea’s first Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL4) certification on budget and within the project time frame.
