Wind River Declares Commitment to POSIX and PSE54 Conformance
- Wind River to expand POSIX support for defense and commercial aerospace programs
- Using Wind River POSIX-based Platforms, companies can leverage existing software investments to build device software faster and at a lower cost
"Aerospace and defense manufacturers and government agencies are facing mandates to lower costs. By leveraging existing software investments and driving standards, organizations can reduce costs and speed time to market. POSIX has remained a key open standard in this regard," said Jerry Krasner, Ph.D., chief analyst, Embedded Market Forecasters. "With its Safe and Secure Program, Wind River has established a leadership position in A&D and today's announcement illustrates their ongoing support of this market."
Wind River’s VxWorks General Purpose Platform is currently POSIX-compliant. Organizations including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and the Department of Defense turn to Wind River for its proven and reliable technology. This year, Wind River will release VxWorks 6.0, which includes process model memory protection and significantly enhanced levels of POSIX compliance. The company is committed to achieving full conformance with the IEEE 1003.13 POSIX real-time application environment profile, PSE54.
“Wind River helps our customers minimize inefficiencies while accelerating the standardization of the device software development process. The openness and interoperability that are realized through standards, such as POSIX, play a key role in achieving this goal ,” said Dave Fraser, chief marketing officer at Wind River. “ As POSIX gains momentum within the aerospace and defense market, Wind River will work to ensure that the company’s products meet the ongoing needs of its customers.”
The IEEE 1003.1-2003 POSIX standard, developed and maintained by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), defines standard application programming interfaces to support code portability. The IEEE 1003.13 real-time profiles allow real-time operating systems to have standard POSIX interfaces without requiring a traditional full UNIX kernel. With POSIX, organizations in sectors, such as the government, can reduce costs and increase efficiencies by leveraging device software across multiple projects.
With more than twenty years in the aerospace and defense market, Wind River continues to work with leading defense contractors and government agencies to help them with next-generation programs and projects. Additionally, in July 2003, Wind River announced that it is collaborating with The Open Group to work with industry-leading device software vendors, along with corporate and government organizations, to help ensure the development of secure and reliable test and certification systems and promote standardization in the device software market.
