Wind River Expands Ecosystem Collaboration on 5G Distributed Edge Solution for Service Providers

A combined software and hardware platform would integrate Wind River Cloud Platform, a Kubernetes-based software offering for managing edge cloud infrastructure, with Dell EMC PowerEdge server hardware. The initial target use case will be virtual RAN (vRAN) infrastructure for 5G networks.

Projects using C++, either mixed with Ada or standalone, can now benefit from the same high level of quality and support that GNAT Pro Ada customers receive. GNAT Pro C++ handles versions of the language standard up to and including C++17. It is targeted to VxWorks® 7 (ARM, PowerPC, and x86), Embedded Linux (ARM, PowerPC and x86), as well as VxWorks 6.9.x (PowerPC 32 bits), and is hosted on x86 GNU Linux. At the FACE and SOSA Expo & TIM in Sept 2019, Wind River and Curtiss-Wright collaborated to demonstrate the benefits of combining the separation principles of an ARINC 653 Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) architecture with FACE™ components in a safety-critical system. The demonstration showcased Wind River’s UoCs integrated in Curtiss-Wright’s multi-core VPX3-152 single board computer (SBC). The VPX3-152, featuring NXP’s QorIQ T2080 Power Architecture processor and available in both DO-254 DAL A safety-certifiable and non-certifiable variants, provided the hardware foundation for Wind River’s VxWorks 653 DO-178C DAL A safety-certifiable RTOS and Basic Avionics Lightweight Source Archetype (BALSA) applications. As well, the demo featured Bell’s EGI application (PSSS) and serial I/O adapter (IOSS).

Curtiss-Wright Defense Solutions introduced its first fully integrated deployable avionics system. The SPIRIT Hawk Avionics Computing Platform, the newest member of Curtiss-Wright’s SPIRIT family of rugged avionics systems, is a fully integrated high-performance COTS-based solution that leverages trusted, field-proven DO-254/DO-178 safety-certifiable modules to reduce development time, balance cost, and mitigate project risk. The ready-to-deploy system’s base configuration features Curtiss-Wright hardware building blocks, including the V3-152 single board computer (SBC), V3-719 graphics and video capture module, and V3-611 I/O module. SPIRIT Hawk is configured in a fully rugged ½ ATR short enclosure with four 3U OpenVPX™ slots and a power supply slot. This innovative solution is ideal for reducing program time and cost while mitigating integration risk for critical applications such as mission computers, UAV ground stations, DVE systems, flight control computers, and display computers on manned and unmanned fixed wing and rotary aircraft. The SPIRIT Hawk base configurations are supported by Wind River® VxWorks® 653 operating system.

One of the biggest challenges facing rugged system designers today is how best to deploy as much compute power as possible while selecting the smallest, least power-hungry architecture and providing protection for critical mission data against malicious cyber attacks and reverse engineering. The new VPX3-1707 processor module meets this design challenge head-on with Arm’s exceptional performance-per-watt functionality and support for Curtiss-Wright’s TrustedCOTS™ Enhanced Trusted Boot features, including NXP Secure Boot and Arm TrustZone, along with a security FPGA allowing customer extensibility and customization. The processor is specifically designed for the specific demands of embedded applications. Our Partner Percepio has good news for the growing crowd of embedded Linux developers: the next step on the Tracealyzer 4 roadmap is proper support for Linux tracing, complete with live visualization and all other great features in the new generation of Tracealyzer. Since the tracing is based on the LTTng tracing framework, it works on any Linux system supported by LTTng (including Wind River Linux). This will be the main new feature in Tracealyzer v4.4, scheduled for release this summer.

AdaCore announces extended support for Wind River VxWorks

AdaCore announced the roadmap of its flagship GNAT Pro Ada Development Environment for the latest version of the Wind River® VxWorks® real-time operating system (RTOS), with immediate support for the ARM 64-bit processor. Additional platforms (32 and 64-bit PowerPC, 32-bit ARM, 32 and 64-bit Intel) will follow in the coming months. GNAT Pro customers using previous VxWorks releases can continue to do so, with an easy upgrade path to the latest release. AdaCore’s GNAT Pro C Development Environment is on the same schedule as GNAT Pro Ada, and GNAT Pro C++ for the latest VxWorks release is planned for early 2020.

US Army and CoreAVI announced that their successful collaboration on the Crew Mission Station (CMS), technology demonstration program for UH-60 Blackhawk aircraft, has resulted in CMS being selected for a Limited User Evaluation (LUE). The prototype CMS is running CoreAVI’s ArgusCore™ OpenGL® SC 1.0.1 graphics library suite and EGL_EXT_Compositor on Intel® i7 hardware with embedded HD5000 graphics displayed on Avalex’s 6” x 8” smart display. Fully integrated with Presagis’s ARINC 661 server, the CMS could be the first system evaluated by warfighters using the EGL_EXT_Compositor extension, taking advantage of its flexible graphics windowing capabilities within their multiple guest OS architecture. The system uses the Wind River® VxWorks® 653 Multi-core Edition on Intel and supports multiple processes within each guest OS virtual machine. The CMS is planned to be the first known implementation of the display management services as defined in Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE) Technical Standard (TS) Edition 3.0. The FACE TS promotes portability of software through well-defined open interfaces helping reduce the time needed to add new and enhanced applications to the CMS.
New release TESSY 4.1 supports Wind River compilers

The latest version 4.1 of TESSY (64Bit) fully supports C/C++ and contains many new functions compared to TESSY 4.0: With an automated Fault Injection a special test code can be instrumented into the source files to be tested. The new script perspective allows textual editing of tests in a dedicated test scripting language. The integrated Classification Tree Editor (CTE) has been implemented as a full Eclipse-based editor and enhances the design of test cases and the assignment of test data to tree nodes. As a dynamic test tool, TESSY 4.1 includes a static code analysis: Calculation of the cyclomatic complexity (McCabe metric) as well as further derived test case quality measures. The Test Data Editor (TDE) now provides the possibility of entering arithmetic expressions as test data. To stimulate or measure hardware signals during the test, TESSY V4.1 provides a hardware adapter interface that can be used to control external hardware for stimulation and measurement of hardware signals. Also, the existing support of TESSY for the compilers of Wind River has been extended to this new TESSY 4.1 version.

The ECI driver with VxWorks support allows easy development of CAN-based real-time applications on Intel® Core™ architectures and processors. IXXAT PC interfaces are available for all common PC interface standards – from PCIe and PCIe Mini to USB and Ethernet. Depending on the PC/CAN interface version, up to four CAN channels and a galvanic isolation of the CAN bus interface is offered.

The wolfSSL (formerly CyaSSL) embedded SSL library now supports lwIP, the light weight internet protocol implementation, out of the box. The focus of lwIP is to reduce RAM usage while still providing a full TCP stack. That focus makes lwIP great for use in embedded systems (such as VxWorks), the same area where wolfSSL is an ideal match for SSL/TLS needs.
