Test Automation: Accelerate Testing in Virtual Labs with Unlimited Targets

THE CHALLENGE

An industrial manufacturer of ruggedized tablets running Wind River® Linux is migrating its product to a new-generation hardware platform that delivers better graphics and power management to help improve battery life.

Moving to the new hardware requires the platform development team to update drivers in the Linux kernel. It also gives the team the opportunity to make operating system optimizations to take advantage of critical hardware security features, such as hardware root of trust and secure boot.

All modifications made for the new platform will require the team to perform functional and regression tests. The manufacturer’s software team has a library of test plans it would like to reuse for the project. It also needs to add new tests to cover the changes.

In the past, building the test plans and executing the actual tests against physical hardware took weeks. The process was linear and heavily dependent on the availability of hardware. The team, under pressure to get the new platform and features on the market as soon as possible to meet a contract delivery deadline, needs to cut its test schedule by at least half.

THE SOLUTION

Wind River Studio allows platform teams to automate the testing process. Within Studio, the team can utilize an intuitive user interface to quickly assemble existing test plans and add new plans specific to the project.

The team can then schedule and optimize tests using Wind River Studio Virtual Lab, which also provides access to an unlimited number of virtual targets. Validating the platform changes on virtual targets accelerates a critical QA workflow and helps find defects earlier in the process.

THE RESULTS

Using the test automation capability in Studio, the development team was able to maximize existing assets and limited resources to perform more tests faster, build a higher-quality product, and meet the strict delivery date required by the end customer.
