Zero-Touch Provisioning: Day Two Operations at Scale

THE CHALLENGE

A service provider has decided to deploy an Open RAN 5G network. One of the challenges in deploying and operating a disaggregated network is the installation and configuration of each remote site. Current methods require extensive hands-on provisioning and configuration by knowledgeable personnel at each location, which is expensive and untenable.

THE SOLUTION

With Wind River Studio® Conductor and zero-touch provisioning (ZTP), once the hardware is racked, connected, and powered on, the operator can deploy the infrastructure to all of the remote sites at once, through automation, with configuring based on predefined models.

It starts with the installation of a bare metal, geo-distributed edge cloud from a single Linux distribution. Then all container images are downloaded from a central registry during bootstrap. Next the system will deploy the edge cloud configuration (i.e., CPU memory, network requirements) on that edge cloud. Finally, it will confirm that the infrastructure deployment is complete and ready for application deployment.

THE RESULTS

This automated process reduces the time spent installing and configuring each individual site. Once deployed, on Day Two the operator can combine ZTP processes with Studio Conductor automation and orchestration to manage the full lifecycle of service deployment on the network, automated.
